Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation of critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system (EMS). AEMTs possess the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation as part of a comprehensive EMS response.

The AEMT program is designed to provide advanced training in lifesaving skills expanding upon EMT foundations. The course includes instruction on advanced patient assessments, medication administration, and comprehensive emergency care skills, allowing students to elevate their emergency response capabilities.

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Program at Southwest Technical College will consist of various settings including lectures, practical skills, ambulance ride-alongs, and clinical rotations within emergency room settings. The world of emergency medicine becomes a reality in this program as your mentor may allow you to administer medications, start IVs, or ventilate patients.

Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as a link between the scene and the emergency health care system and provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation of critical and emergent patients.

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program prepares individuals for a role in emergency medical response. Students learn to perform advanced medical procedures, manage patient care in pre-hospital settings, and handle clinical emergencies. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to provide critical care and communicate effectively with all stakeholders in emergency situations.

Prepares students for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Advanced through the Utah Bureau of EMS. Builds off EMT skills and includes advanced airway management, intravenous access, medication administration, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and other advanced medical skills.

Expands EMT-Basic skills to include advanced management of hypo-perfusion, airways, drugs/medications, advanced airway management, intravenous access, medication administration, and cardiac rhythm interpretation. Requires current Utah EMT License. Approximately 8 weeks in length.

Advanced-level course teaching pathophysiology and anatomy associated with injuries and illnesses along with advanced skills including IV medication administration, injections, and advanced airway management. Requires completion of an EMT course for enrollment.

Building on the foundational EMT program, which must be completed as a prerequisite, the AEMT program features advanced coursework, hands-on lab training, and expert instruction. Students develop critical skills in patient assessment, airway management, IV therapy, EKG interpretation, pharmacology, and more, preparing them for a vital role within the EMS system. Students will receive extensive hands-on training and participate in clinical ride-alongs. This program prepares students for the NREMT Advanced EMT Certification Exam, enabling them to take on greater responsibilities and advance in their EMS careers.

Builds upon EMT knowledge and skills, allowing providers to establish IV access, place advanced airways, and administer a broader range of medications. Requires prior EMT licensure.

150+ hour advanced emergency medical technician program providing instruction in limited advanced care, advanced medical and trauma emergencies, airway management, and EMS operations.

Advanced EMT Academy extends training with more specialized skills, facilitating progression to certification as an AEMT. Covering intricate EMT procedures, this 12-week course improves career prospects in Fire/EMS settings and requires intense training exercises alongside classroom sessions. Success leads to readiness for the national AEMT exam.

Expands the EMT-Basic's skills to include advance management of hypoprofusion, airways, and drugs/medications. Utah state certification is possible after successful completion of this class; however, students may take this course for knowledge and experience and not certify.

Combined in-person EMT Basic and AEMT course with approximately 10-12 weeks duration. Includes comprehensive medical training, virtual reality, and NREMT exam preparation.
