Prairie State College is a two-year community college providing a range of educational opportunities including associate degrees, technical and career certificates, and adult, corporate, and continuing education programs. The EMT and First Responder programs are offered in collaboration with St. James Hospitals and Health Centers under the guidance of lead instructors certified by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The EMT program at Prairie State College equips students with essential skills for emergency medical care in pre-hospital environments. Students are trained in handling cardiac arrests, fractures, and childbirth, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. On completion, students are eligible for the state or national EMT certification exam, marking a vital step in entering emergency medical services and gaining employment in healthcare.

The EMT Certificate program equips students with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively respond to critical medical situations in a pre-hospital care environment. Throughout the program, students will receive comprehensive training in key areas such as responding to cardiac arrests, treating fractures, managing various injuries, and handling childbirth emergencies. The curriculum combines theoretical learning with hands-on practical experience to ensure students are well-prepared to handle real-life emergency scenarios. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be fully prepared to sit for the EMT certification exam.

Prairie State College's Fire Science Technology program includes degrees and certificates to prepare students for positions such as volunteer, part-time, and full-time firefighters. Students learn firefighting operations, safety procedures, and certification preparation for careers in municipal fire departments. The program includes hands-on training to meet state and regulatory standards for career progression in the fire services industry.

This comprehensive program equips citizens, firefighters, police officers, and others with the essential skills to effectively respond to emergency situations in various settings, including homes, communities, and workplaces. Upon successful completion of the course, students will attain CPR certification.

The Paramedic Certificate is a comprehensive training program focused on preparing graduates to be competent and confident entry-level paramedics. Students will receive training in the assessment, treatment, and transportation of victims. Instruction is focused on hands-on experiences using human patient simulators, trainers, and other equipment used in the profession. The program is offered in collaboration with UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital and the South Cook EMS System.
