Once certified to the ALS level, personnel must maintain their certification by attending continuing education courses. Mandatory training hours must consist of required topics and must be taught face-to-face by an instructor certified by the State or authorized by the Medical Director.

Department personnel are trained to EMT-B level when they attend the Fire and Rescue Department Recruit Training Program, accounting for five weeks of recruit firefighter training.

Paramedic certification training teaches employees to interpret electrocardiograms, deliver cardiac defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion, and administer intravenous lines and life-saving pharmacological treatments. The training program consists of a 16-week course contracted out to Northern Virginia Community College.
